Environment

Our primary goal is to protect people and the environment and we work hard to minimise the environmental impact of our operations.

We engage with our stakeholders and seek approval of our environmental management by listening to and addressing the concerns that people have.

Our regulator, the Environment Agency (EA in England and Wales) and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA in Scotland), monitors compliance with the authorisations in place. We work hard with the regulator to ensure the highest standards of environmental protection.

The Nuclear Sector Plan sets out the Environment Agency’s plan for the nuclear industry in England and Wales. The purpose of the Plan is to promote continuous improvement of the industry’s performance in order to deliver environmental benefits that include, but extend beyond, those that can be achieved by regulatory compliance alone.

Carbon Footprint

We are committed to reduce the carbon footprint of the organisation and will take action to achieve this.  Our aim is to make carbon emissions as low as reasonably practical.

Calculated for the first time in 2009-10 across the former Magnox Limited sites our carbon footprint was 600 thousand tonnes - equivalent to the carbon emissions from 100,000 homes.

This figure included:

  • Electricity use at all of our sites including support offices
  • Transport on planes and trains
  • Miles driven
  • Fuels used on site including diesel, burning oil and fuel oil
