Maentwrog Celebrates 80 Years of Electricity Generation
Current and former employees of Magnox Limited joined together with various customers and stakeholders recently to celebrate a very special anniversary.
Station staff, local neighbours, suppliers and contractors converged on the site on the 12th September to celebrate 80 years of sustainable electricity generation at Maentwrog hydro-electric power station, near Trawsfynydd in North Wales.
Operationally, the site has an extra reason to celebrate. The wash-out summer that has driven everyone else to despair has helped the Maentwrog team to race towards their annual generation target.
Maentwrog is already over half way towards meeting its annual target of generating 50 million units of electricity during the financial year. The period since April has included an outage to carry out maintenance and repair work and we’ve still got the wettest months of the year yet to come – believe it or not.
Greg Evans, Site Director responsible for Maentwrog, said: “It was an honour to be able to address this audience and mark this milestone in the site’s history. I believe it’s also a testament to the team at the site that we’ve reached this point on a high in terms of production and performance.”
Maentwrog is operated by Magnox Limited on behalf of the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The revenue from generating electricity is essential to funding the ongoing programme of nuclear decommissioning in the UK.
